That was the knob!
Yes, a prison ship in international waters! AFAIK that's some way off of Land's End in the Atlantic...that's going to work well (unless the Channel Islands count as 'International waters').
How do these people hold-down jobs?

I think the Channel Islands only count as international waters for matters of tax-dodging efficiency.

Jenrick and Gale visited Manston yesterday and Gale on the toady program this morning was both pretty scathing of the Home Office and very supportive of those working there in difficult situations, and the need for faster processing.

Just listened to somebody Saunders senior immigration something or other in the govt. He needs taking outside and shooting for supporting Rwanda, and suggesting a cruise ship detention centre in international waters. The final straw was saying that the conditions in Manston are no worse than the conditions they were in in Calais....

As long as he's was speaking from the heart.... 🙄

I've come across some of these guys and their racist hate filled spewings on soc med posts, which are meant to be about tackling street harassment, and DV.

It's scarily horrible.

Or horribly scarey.

Thankfully most other people on there tackle them on it, but sadly, there's also a not inconsiderable number who will nod along with them too ..

Had the same on local fb groups in Kent...
One of our very own CC members is proud of his work helping to count migrants arriving by boat by watching from the cliff tops with his binoculars. He's not racist of course, him and his mates just want to check the governments arithmetic....
He lives a long way from the sea, strange way to spend your spare time dontcha think?

Sad that there are people so keen to invest their time like this, hating on people who are so very much less fortunate.
Stirred up by the usual nasty suspects.

But we mustn't forget, that there are also many decent, humane people, who are trying to help asylum seekers too.

I'm sure there's more than one or two on here.

It's also sad that as right wingers they can't see the financial benefit in getting these people to land and allowing them to work and pay taxes. These people want to work. Instead you get stupid arguments like

"So why is it only men coming across"...

Simple - look at your own family. If you needed to escape from your own country would you do so with your wife and children who would be at risk of trafficking or rape - or would you find them a temporarily safe place while you as the male try take a very dangerous journey to somewhere where you can get set up with work and then arrange for them to travel to you?

I've said it before but we need to stop talking about Asylum seekers and start talking about displaced journalists, teachers, doctors, nurses, IT technicians, engineers, researchers, labourers, camera operators, machinists, etc. Just because they don;'t know the place and may not speak the same language it doesn't follow that they are feckless criminals. If there were they'd have found a much better way to get to the UK.

Agree in principal .

But just getting people to stop calling them 'illegal immigrants' would be a positive first step.

During a debate in Parliament yesterday about protecting renters from being thrown out onto the streets by unscrupulous landlords, than nice Tory MP for Dover Natalie Elphicke, told of a single mum of 7 kids in her constituency having been thrown onto the streets helpless, whilst people arriving in boats get put into hotels....
Let's just unpack that eh, Natalie?
Apart from a false equivalence, who the fark is in charge of running social services and rules about rentals? As you're thicker than a Devon cobb wall, I'll tell you, it's you and your mates you stupid heartless racist daffodil....

Trouble is there are a lot of people dumb enough to fall for this, and nod along.

Who has massively encouraged property capitalism, who made renting more insecure and expensive, who sold off the social housing stock, who deliberately imposed austerity and cut funding to children's services ? ?

Have to say it's interesting to now hear about a Tory suddenly sticking up for a single parent.

When usually they're portrayed by the right wing as benefit scrounging, uncontrolled breeders of feral scum. If that's convenient to their divisive narrative.

Oh but now they're now being wheeled out and used to encourage demonising of asylum seekers.

But yes people fall for it time and again..
So no surprise they do it I guess??
