US Dems are to the left of Labour? I'm not sure I believe that, it's a shame if true. Interesting to actually look at economics though, which is generally what I mean when I use the terms left and right wing.

We could found a New Town for the common man, Plebury. Just an ordinary common or garden kind of nowhere. Everyone would know their place. Buildings could be designed in some kind of down-at-heel, semi-derilict vernacular. Jonathan Meades might make a program about it. Everything would be commonplace. There would be a station, nobody would be above it, but we'd all know how to go on.

OBR to deliver initial forecast to chancellor next week​

Following a meeting with the prime minister, Liz Truss, and the chancellor, Kwasi Kwarteng, the Office for Budget Responsibility has confirmed it will deliver an initial forecast on 7 October.

A spokesperson for the OBR said:

[The forecast] will, as always, be based on our independent judgment about economic and fiscal prospects and the impact of the government’s policies.

The announcement comes after a 48-minute emergency meeting at 11 Downing Street this morning.

They added:

We discussed the economic and fiscal outlook, and the forecast we are preparing for the chancellor’s medium-term fiscal plan.
We will deliver the first iteration of that forecast to the chancellor on Friday 7 October, and will set out the full timetable up to 23 November next week.

The markets job is to price in risk. They're not at all panicked about the strong Labour showing - or the weakness of the Conservative party as it goes into a very difficult conference. They may also have priced in the fact that the government has been brought to heel and won't try the same thing again. If they aim to balance the books by reducing pensions and benefits under cover of inflation, there's not going to be any surge in Tory popularity any time soon.

I'm not sure that people should be able to move from council estates to "nicer" areas of town, why should people be allowed to try to better their quality of life?
It's particularly galling if these people are of working age, why can't they stay where they are and work for their community rather than running away. And how many nicer areas have they passed though to get to their destination, if they absolutely have to leave the council estate, why don't they have to stay in the first nice area they come to?
