I’ll have to do some field work and let you know.

I thought you meant that a male politician using a male escort carries a bit more blackmail value than the same politician paying for sex with a woman, should it come to the attention of someone who’d use it for blackmail; not that gay escorts were more likely to perpetrate the blackmail.

Exact. The none voters be those who do not drive nor go abroad.
And how many will have an expired passport. My guess is that 10% will find they cannot vote.

I don't really see what the point in the article/letter is here to be honest?

They haven't changed the rules, just continued with what was introduced last year which as Rees-Mogg says it didn't really work out how the Conservatives had hoped.

Personally I don't agree with it, particularly as voter fraud (which was the reason touted for the ID introduction) is not a problem in the UK.

You can still use expired photo ID, as long as it looks like you and has your name on it. I used my out of date passport last year.

The irony is that where voter fraud or malpractice happen it's overwhelmingly with postal votes for which no ID is required.

Yep, and even then only 6 were recorded last year, 5 NFA and 1 resolved locally:

In the scheme of things, a total non-issue. There are a lot of things I don't understand about the Conservative party and why they do what they do, but this was definitely one of their stupider moves.

The only historic incidence of real electoral fraud that I can recall is Lutfur Rahman trying to be elected Mayor of Tower Hamlets. He was convicted of electoral fraud, but he used religious intimidation, false claims about his opponents, diverting grant money to Bangladeshi and Somali charities in return for support and there were some allegations of postal vote rigging.

He was found guilty, banned from running for office until 2021 and struck off as a Solicitor.

His story has a happy ending though. He was elected Mayor of Tower Hamlets in 2022. Achievements to date include making the streets more dangerous for school children by removing school traffic orders that lowered speed limits or prevented traffic at key times. CIPFA have raised concerns about the Council being mismanaged under Rahman and the Aspire party.

When my wife had no photo id I checked and - at the time - they were syaing that a recently expired passport would be accepted as ID to vote

whether or not that was policy - or still true - I do not know for certain as we decided to go abroad so she got a new passport
(a nice new black one - wasn;t there something about blue ones at some point?????)

You could, and still can, use expired photo ID.

My cynicism thinks Mogg was strategically playing it down. Lots of would be new voters will not have ID. The guy is 100% politics.

None of this would have been affected by requiring voter ID.

Just a shame that his politics are so vastly out of touch with reality he comes across as a total bellend.

Of course. They structured it entirely to ensure that elderly people can use 300 different kinds of photo ID but youngsters can't. It's pure coincidence that older voters are far more likely to vote Conservative than younger voters.
