- iced up windows on the inside because we had no central heating
- sweets as a treat on Fridays (if father had worked an extra "half shift" that week)
- an orange and a sixpence for christmas
- no issues with choosing what to wear, if you only had one of everything
- endless games with a "bald" tennis ball
- coal picking on the pit heap, or, alongside the railway line
- sailing home made rafts on the pit pond
- etc etc
PS, some of it was fun, but, on balance, you are right, it was shite

It certainly had its perks I guess. I never forget waking up freezing a with ice on the inside of the windows and a slushy cup of water on the bedside table.

rationing was a good thing - everyone was so much healthier!!
and cars - we had a great car industry
OK - they would never start in the morning and broke down a lot and rusted for fun
but we had a great car industry in the past

It was tongue in cheek, but, we were not affluent enough to have a car (its ability to start was not therefore significant).
As for rationing, yes, It was still in place during my childhood, but, since, as I explained, I got sweets once per week, if I was lucky, rationing of such "luxuries" was not something which lingers in my memory, more lack of ability to buy, than lack of availability, in my childhood world.
