I fear that there is no going back to that time, whoever gains power. The public has low expectations, and politicians are happy to deliver. Trust is just a marketing buzzword.

I fear you are correct. Expectations of "trust" and "honesty" have been lost (possibly forever) in many areas of Public and Private life (IMHO), not just Government.

Channel 4 has said an external investigation into allegations made by the culture secretary, Nadine Dorries, that a reality TV show she appeared on used paid actors has found no evidence of fakery.

Rishi Sunak has pledged to push ahead with the privatisation of Channel 4 if he becomes prime minister, clearing the way for the sale of the broadcaster next year.

His backing for privatisation all but kills any hope that Channel 4 bosses had that a new Conservative leader might choose to drop the sale process, which is opposed by the vast majority of the British media industry.

Instead, support for privatisation appears to have become an easy way for the two remaining Tory leadership candidates to signal their free market credentials to party members who will choose the next prime minister.
